Thank you everyone for your hard work and commitment on our Friday school planning day. We have started some important conversations. Dawn and I heard loud and clear that teachers want to meet together as grade groups so we will be working on make that happen. In addition, I think we decided the following:
Our mission statement needs to be tweaked / simplified possible as part of our May pro-d day.
We need to consider a variety of options for report cards and interviews next year a survey will be coming out soon for your input. Please feel free to add other options / ideas if they are missed.
We still want to focus on oral language and need to establish some particular areas for staff development and student learning.

Thanks also to the social committee for planning such a delicious lunch for everyone!

We have only 30 people registered for our Centennial in spite of the fact that many people have said they plan to attend. Please take the time to encourage any of your contacts to REGISTER. Thanks.

OK… we’ve had the showers and there are lots of flowers but where is the sunshine (and warming up) that we expect to get in April? Hopefully this week!

This is the week when the VSB announces their preliminary budget so be prepared to be called to a staff meeting on Tuesday at lunch to hear what is planned. Likely, you have already heard that 8 people from PASA (excluded staff) were laid off last week. I imagine the news will be grim given our ongoing budget shortfall but the board is doing its best to protect classrooms and programs.

Centennial planning continues at the pace of a speeding freight train! Please let Dawn or Patti know if you have any questions, concerns or ideas as we get closer to the big day.

THIS WEEK’S EVENTS:

1. Cardiome is a Vancouver based pharmaceutical company who have committed to reaching out to young people about careers and opportunities in Science. A group of their staff members have teamed up with the Mens’ UBC Basketball team to bring a program for our grade 7 students on Monday. Please note that the old gym will be in use all day. Lunch is being provided and two excellent quality microscopes are being donated to our school.

2. Patti and Dawn will attend the budget meeting at the VSB at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

3. Friday is our school planning day and Vaisakhi lunch. Hopefully all staff will be there as we work together to review student progress and set our goal for next year. There will be prizes!

4. Looking forward to next week – mark Wednesday the 20th for our Smartboard coffee club. All going well, Gwen will share how to set up a Jeopardy style game on the board.

Have a great week everyone!

I am hoping that all of you enjoyed the two week Spring Break! Many of you had vacation time in exotic places and I look forward to hearing about your trips! Others spent time at home with friends and family and some crazy people like David and I did home renovations. I am sure you will be thrilled to know that the floor is in!

The Centennial is just a month away and it seems like there is still a lot to do. I will be handing out the Decade room materials to teachers this week. I also will be providing you with a tentative agenda / schedule for the event. Please keep passing on the word to people who you think might attend the more people the better!

Congratulations to Gwen on a successful book fair. It takes hours of work on her part to organize and run the fair. Thanks also to anyone who found the time to go down and help out.

Thanks also to Harjinder and the Student Council sponsors for their work in organizing a fundraiser for the Earthquake in Japan.
