Weekly Message #4-11

UnknownA busy week ahead as we enjoy all of the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.  I have just finished stapling all of the concert tickets to the request forms.  They will be coming to your boxes on Monday for distribution along with a short hand out about the concert.  We have over 400 people coming to the concert.  Henry and I will be coming around and asking 5 intermediate classes to move their chairs down to the gym on Tuesday afternoon to supplement our chair supply.  If you are one of the “lucky” classes selected, please make sure your chairs are labelled with your name so we can return everything appropriately!  Thanks in advance for your help with chairs and any other things that come up over the next couple of days.  I know that teachers have been working very hard – especially Jane! – to make sure that the students are ready to perform on Tuesday night.  If you are planning to hang around after school, please make sure to sign up for the pizza dinner for staff (supplied by Moberly).  The concert is going to be amazing!

Carol singing will be taking place in the new gym four mornings this week (every day except Wednesday)  Please encourage your students to come down between 8:30 and 9 to join us.

  1. Carol singing Mon, Tues, Thurs & Fri 8:30 – 9:00 in the new gym.
  2. Christmas Concert Tuesday night 7:00 – ? Cookies and Chai for sale ($1.00 each).  50/50 draw ($1.00 ticket or 3 for $5)
  3. Books for me on Thursday – schedule in your boxes this week.
  4. Code Red Drill this week – please review protocol and be prepared.

Have a wonderful holiday – you all deserve it.  Next message on January 5th 2014!

Weekly Message #4-10

DSC_0351What a wonderful Christmas party we had at the River Rock on Friday night!!  Thanks again to our social committee for putting together such a great time.  The buffet was delicious and the band in the lounge was lots of fun.  I hear the ambience in Room 971 was excellent and there were some great party shots posted to Facebook too!  (I should have taken one for today’s post).

I will be out of the building a fair bit this week to sit on the Principal selection committee and interviews – my apologies.  With report cards and interviews done, hopefully it will be a quiet week.

Only two weeks to go until your much deserved holiday time!

  1. Patti at the VSB all day Monday
  2. Immunization Clinic on Tuesday
  3. Health & Safety meeting Thursday at 8:15 in the staffroom
  4. Patti at the VSB Thursday and Friday afternoons.

Weekly Message #4-9

Thanks Sousana for sharing this pyjama picture!

Thanks Sousana for sharing this pyjama picture!

It’s great to know that so many of you are reading the weekly message.  I selected six names randomly and handed out some prizes!

Thanks for supporting Pyjama Day on Friday – it’s too bad that wearing pyjamas doesn’t make the kids a bit more restful – sounds like it was quite the opposite but I think they had fun.

Henry and I will be in the building for parent/ teacher interviews this week.  Please do not hesitate to ask for our help if you need some back up for an interview.  Items from the Lost and Found will be laid out on a table and coat rack this week for students / parents to peruse before they are donated to charity.

I am always reminded at report card time how hard teachers and staff are work to maximize learning for our students.  When I visit your classrooms, I appreciate the quality learning activities and multi-modal projects that are evident in classroom displays.  As part of my professional growth plan, I continue to explore best practices in “Differentiated Instruction”.

“Differentiation means tailoring instruction to meet individual needs. Whether teachers differentiate content, process, products, or the learning environment, the use of ongoing assessment and flexible grouping makes this a successful approach to instruction.” Carol Ann Tomlinson

Differentiation is something all good teachers do naturally but like all areas of professional practice, I think it helps to keep reading and revisiting ways to make our work with children more effective.  I found an excellent article which outlines the key aspects of differentiation.  Please click on the link below if you would like to read more!
