Weekly Message #7-29

IMG_9910Hoping you all had a great weekend.  David and I went to a memorial service for a friend’s mother this Saturday and had to drive through Surrey to get there.  The crowds of people heading to the Vaisakhi parade were huge – even on the periphery.  It’s too bad the weather didn’t cooperate but at least it didn’t rain all day.  Thanks to those of you who were able to “dress” for Vaisakhi – it was wonderful to see so many of our students in their beautiful suits!

Thank you for your input on the calendar, school fees and the school plan.  It felt like we were racing to get it all done in a very short period of time.

Calendar –  will be submitted for approval with the April date changed to Monday, April 30th.

School fees – We can do a bulk purchase of headphones through the school board for $5 a student so based on your feedback and a discussion with the PAC executive, I will increase our school fees to $50 per student to include a set of headphones.  Teachers will need to consider how to store the headphones safely for use in the lab and your classrooms.

School Plan – I would like to meet with anyone interested in working on the actual School Plan goal related to our chosen focus area of social / emotional learning at lunch on Tuesday so we can bring something to next week’s staff committee.  The plan is due in May so our timeline is short.

EVENTS THIS WEEK:

  1. School Plan Goal sub-committee in Patti’s office on Tuesday at lunch.  Any interested staff member is welcome.
  2. Earth Day Assembly on Tuesday at 1:00 will be led by Division 5.
  3. Patti & Karl at the area meeting on Wednesday morning – Jane will be in charge.
  4. Patti on vacation Thursday & Friday.

Have a great week everyone!

Weekly Message #7-28

Hoping that all of you had a wonderful long weekend with time for rest, relaxation and perhaps some family time!  We had a delicious buffet dinner for Easter at my Dad’s golf club with the whole family.

I am looking forward to working with you all on our School plan on Tuesday morning.  I appreciate the opportunity to get this important task done and as always anticipate your thoughtful feedback and discussion.

Wednesday will be a prep time payback day – Karl will provide the details.  With 3 days off and a missed day last week, we have a lot of time to pay back.

Thanks to all the primary teachers for interrupting your day to bring the students down for the Easter Egg Hop!  It seemed like most of the students enjoyed it.

EVENTS THIS WEEK:

  1. Prep coverage on Wednesday – am and pm.
  2. Patti will be at a workshop on Thursday afternoon.
  3. PAC Hot lunch and concession on Friday.

Have a great short week everyone!

Weekly Message #7-27

It’s lovely to see a bit of sunshine today – even for a brief time between rain showers. Surely the weather is going to change eventually!  We have a short week this week and next so let’s hope our long weekend next week will bring some much needed sun.  We are also hoping for some sun on Thursday for our Easter Egg Hunt.  It will go ahead rain or shine so stay tuned for the alternate venue if needed.

images-1It’s Vaisakhi on April 13th and the annual parade in Vancouver will be on Saturday. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend this year but encourage others to check it out – lots of beautiful clothes and delicious food!  Please encourage students to wear their traditional clothes on Thursday.  A challenge to all staff to wear something for Vaisakhi on Thursday too!

Apologies to all for the short timeline on getting your supply orders in by Thursday.  We appreciate your commitment to meet the timeline for budgetary reasons.

EVENTS THIS WEEK:

  1. SBT with Kathy Grimm on Tuesday at 11:00 in Room 103.
  2. Patti will be at a meeting at Garibaldi on Tuesday afternoon.
  3. Patti will be at a meeting at the VSB on Wednesday afternoon.
  4. Easter Egg Hunt all day on Thursday.  Chocolate eggs will be delivered to intermediate classes last period.

Have a great week everyone!

Weekly Message #7-26

Sun, beautiful sun!  Finally we have some.  Although it is not very warm.  I visited the Grade 7’s and parents at the Superstore Purdy’s chocolate sale this morning and my ears felt like icicles in the short time I was there.  Sales were brisk and the students were working hard to make money for their Grad!  So grateful to the PAC for their support of this event.  There are a couple of PAC events this week.  You are always welcome to join us at the PAC meeting on Tuesday night.  Also, we will be having our second free PAC movie afterschool on Wednesday.  Staff would be very welcome to watch “The Secret Life of Pets” and to help with supervision of students!

We welcome Emelyn Tolentino who will be starting her SSA practicum at Moberly this week.  Her supervisor is Jen Erickson so looking forward to seeing her as well!

We are pleased to receive a grant from the Sheila Tripp Foundation to pay part of the cost for this Friday’s performance of Tapco.

At Tuesday’s staff meeting, I will provide you with some updates on Reporting.  I have run off three documents for each teacher.  The links to these documents are here:

Supporting the Self-Assessment and Reporting of Core Competencies is a draft resource to support teachers in meeting the requirements of the Students Progress Report Order regarding student self-assessment of the Core Competencies

Core Competencies Posters is a series of seven posters that feature the facets of the Core Competencies and “I” statements within each facet which may be helpful for students to self-assess their growth

Educator Update: Classroom Assessment provides information related to classroom assessment, including current status and next steps
